Palace hopes for ‘harmonious’ relationship with Congress

The Palace is hoping for a “harmonious” relationship with both chambers of Congress, which elected its new House Speaker and Senate President Monday.

“We expect a good, harmonious relationship with both houses in the coming years,” Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said in a phone interview.

House of Representatives elected Quezon City Representative Feliciano Belmonte as Speaker of the House at the opening of the 15th Congress.

With an overwhelming 227 votes, Belmonte won over sole opponent Albay Representative Edcel Lagman who got 29 votes.

At the Senate, Senator Juan Ponce Enrile was re-elected as Senate President with 17 votes.

Lacierda said Belmonte’s win came as no surprise since the House Speaker is traditionally allied with the President.

Belmonte and President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III come from the Liberal Party (LP).

Lacierda noted that although Enrile did not come from LP, the Palace has no qualms about him winning the post.

“I don’t think there’ll be any qualms. Senator Enrile is a very good politician. When he was Senate president there was no complaint. We welcome his assumption of office,” said Lacierda.

To have a harmonius relation with both houses of congress is what every new paresident said in the past. But in the end harmony will only be ralized if pork barrels is release immediately to the congressmen and eventually if demands for political concession is granted by the president to the Senators. It’s all politics and personal agenda that will cause a squabble as time goes on.

with partymate as House Speaker and with Sen Enrile, a senator who fights for people’s rights, as Senate President, P.NOY will definitely run the gov’t in a right track.

Nah… I was never a fan of Enrile. He has a track record of being a TRAPO. But he would be fine than Villar.

Pangilinan for me is the best choice. Unfortunately, fellow politicians hates the clean one. Kikio has a track record of standing to what right. That is why he chose to run independently before due to dynasties in the senate like that of the Cayetanos and the Estradas.

Though I do not doubt the good Senator, wasn’t it be better to pass the torch to the young blood? We already know that “old politicking” won’t get us near our imagined change if we really are to change, when we talk of change we talk of new ideas and new horizon only the young possess this kind of trait, if are we going to depart from the “wrong” old ways. I believed we’re going to be stuck here for a long time, makamit kaya natin ang pagbabago? I guess politics here is not yet mature…
